Explore the beautiful island of Mallorca
Mallorca is so much more than just a holiday destination, for although there are plenty of beautiful beaches, many amazing hotels and copious spots to sunbath the island goes deeper than that, having grown and flourished through a diverse history it is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery, walks and cycle routes in the world. Mallorca is an island for every season.
For those joining us on retreats your programme will likely include some of the activites listed below, for those wishing to plan their own retreat or break we've shared with you our favourite tips and recommendations that can help make your stay as fun and authentic as possible. This is what we like to eat, do and see when we're here.
FOOD & WINE
For foodies, the island is a treasure trove of fantastic local markets and restaurants. Too many to list here, within the house we've left a list of our favourite restaurants, which in high season we suggest you pre-book; Margaret can help with booking or recommendations as needed. A morning at the market is a staple of everyday life in Mallorca and, just 2km down the road, we highly recommend a trip to Alaro market on a Saturday morning. Located in the town square this is a typical, small town market - the rotisserie chickens are particularly delicious, we usually get a few to take back for lunch.
The capital of Mallorca, Palma, is a 25 minute drive from Can Bescuyt, alternatively you can get on a 20 minute train that will take you to the city centre from Alaro. Palma is beautiful, buzzing and absolutely worth visiting, the marina and seafront in particular. For foodies the Mercat de Santa Catalina and Mercato del Olivar are the two main markets. Santa Catalina is the largest, breathtaking in it's size and variety, whereas Mercato del Olivar is a smaller, more local market, showcasing more traditional delicacies. There are many fantastic restaurants in Palma, our favourites are in our address book in the house.
WALKING & CYCLING
WALK
The conditions that make Mallorca so wonderful for cyclist also makes it a perfect destination for walking holidays. Sitting at the foothills of the Tren Monera mountains means that Can Bescuyt is the perfect base. Whether you want serious hikes, or more relaxed walks that include a stop for lunch, we recommend Lucy Baulch, a local English walking guide. All her details are within our address book.
CYCLE
Mallorca has become wold renown for its incredible cycle routes and is now one of the most popular cycling destinations in the world. The island boasts 300 sunny days a year and this, along with its mild winters, make for the perfect conditions for a day, or week, on the road. We are located right in the centre of the main cycle area, surrounding by mountains and some of the islands most famous routes. So dedicated to cyclists is Mallorca that our small, local town of Alaro even has its own cycling shop. It's not hard to take out a map and explore the island on bike for yourself, however should you want to really make the most of where you are we highly recommend getting a guide, we've been using Alfonso for years and all his details are in our Address Book.
Beaches & Boats
Although not situated on the coast, the nearest beach to Can Bescuyt is within a 30 minute drive. Which beach to visit varies depending on the time of year, and within the house we've left a list suggesting where and when to go depending on the season. If you like the idea of sailing boats can easily be chartered.
